Ann Murphy

Born in 1975, Ann Murphy has been creating art since she was a child. Throughout her career as a self-taught artist, Murphy has explored a wide variety of techniques including drawing, painting, carpentry and sculpture. At the age of 25, while establishing herself as an artist, she completed a degree in interior design, to round out her arsenal of skills.

She has participated in a multitude of art fairs as well as art shows across Quebec. Murphy has also been represented in exhibitions in Canadian and American galleries. Although her earlier career focused mainly on sculptures she has now embraced painting and has found a cohesive manner in which to blend her two preferred mediums while incorporating paper into her recently painted artworks.

With a particular penchant for animal subjects, Murphy indulges her love of pattern and over-the-top composition of which she has come to be known for. Infusing each inch with personality and soul her artwork is bold and unapologetic. The present work reflects another side of the artist demonstrating her capacity to create what she describes as a more stripped-down work of art. Each style is relevant and uniquely recognizable as Ann Murphy.

“These days I garner inspiration from my life and eclectic surroundings. Nestled in a lovely little neighbourhood flanked by the St-Lawrence River, I am drenched in the tapestry that is Montreal. Endless colours, cultures, textures, nature and urbanism all mix to create an endless amount of visual stimulation. This rich environment is fuel to my soul and allows me to flow from one project to the next seamlessly, never running out of inspiration. I am so excited to be at this place in my life. I am confident, strong and completely invested in my creative process.”
